Tom Crean

We have learned lots about Tom Crean. The Irish explorer from Annascaul in Co. Kerry. He joined the Navy when he was 15 and went on three expeditions to the Antarctic. He travelled on the Discovery, Terra Nova and Endurance missions. Tom Crean was a very brave man, he risked his own life to save two of his fellow explorers. We drew pictures to sequence his adventures. We also discussed the kind of man Tom Crean might have been in Drama and in Art we recreated an iconic image of him using charcoal.

Polar Regions

We decided to follow in Tom Crean’s footsteps and explore the North & South Poles for ourselves. We learned lots of interesting facts about the Arctic and Antarctica including the animals that live there. We got to research and write reports on our favourite one.  We made beautiful pictures in Art of Polar Bears on a snowy landscape using paint, salt and clingfilm.

Magnets

Something else that has a North & South Pole is a magnet. We tested lots of different magents on different objects to see if they were magnetic of non-magnetic. We also made our own Polar Bear Magnets to test out at home.

Chinese New Year

Saturday 28th was the Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Rooster. We learned the story of how the animals of the Zodiac were chosen and some facts about the Chinese New Year celebrations. We made Chinese Lanterns to record some facts and Chinese Dragons in Art.

This is Happy New Year in Chinese: 新年快

It is pronounced : sshin-nyen kwhy-ler

Fun Maths Friday

Last week for Fun Maths Friday we tested our sorting, subtracting and dividing skills using lots of counters. When we finished with those we had to share out some sweets but only once the sums were done.
