Playground Activities
Children in Adamstown National School receive two outside break every day (weather permitting).
Children are allowed to run during playground breaks.
Our school yard is zoned to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities.
Our Active Flag Committee facilitates the use of sports equipment during break times. The children on the Active Flag Committee are the only children allowed to bring in and out the P.E. equipment, unless otherwise directed by a teacher. This is to ensure the P.E. store remains tidy at all times. The Active Flag Committee spend a lot of time organising the equipment and feel very responsible for all items we have in school.
Have a look at the yard timetable, playground helpers rota and playground zones below to see the work the Active Flag Committee are putting in to ensure we have some very fun break times in school.

Yard Games
Check out some of the activities we have been getting up to at lunch time below;
Playmaker Award
As part of our Active School Week 2019, the children in 4th and 5th got the opportunity to participate in the PlayMaker Award.
The PlayMaker Award is a great introduction into leadership giving learners knowledge of how to organise small games and activities that can be used during curricular and extra-curricular time, lunchtimes, breaks, as well as in sports clubs outside school hours.
The PlayMaker Award aims to help learners develop leadership skills such as organisation, communication and teamwork, as well as helping to build confidence and self-esteem as they take on the responsibility of assisting in leading their peers and younger children.
The children learned that in order to organise games for younger children you need to have great communication skills and be very organised. Have a look at some of the pictures from the day below or check out the link to find out more about the PlayMaker Award

Football League
Mr Cousins, with the help of 5th and 6th class set up a very successful Football League for the school year 2018/2019. Children who were interested from 3rd - 6th class were devised up into numerous teams. Teams played against each other at lunch time with one child from 5th or 6th class refereeing the game. The children took charge of recording the results each day on a master results sheet. At the end of the round of matches two teams emerged on top. W e held the finals one afternoon and invited all the classes out to support. The Final included a parade around the pitch waving flags and also the singing of the National Anthem. Great fun was had by all.
Soccer League
Following the success of the football league, Mr. Cousins decided to set up a soccer league for the children. Again they were divided into 5 teams and matches were scheduled for lunch times. This led to another finals day in school where all classes got to cheer on their friends.
Active Lines
At the end of each break time, the Active Flag Committee are asked to assist in the organising of active lines in the school. This is where the children all participate in some form of activity before we enter the school. Exercises include lunges, squats, jummping jacks etc.
Walk and Talk in the Morning
A new initiative we started in 2019 was Walk and Talk in the morning. As the children come into school, instead of lining up and waiting in the cold, the children are asked to walk around our Active School Walkway. At the minute the Parent's Association are fundraising to create a walking path around our pitch to make this an even more enjoyable experience.
Super Troopers
We signed up for Super Troopers in both the 2018/2019 school year and the 2019/2020 school year. It has provided the children with Active Homework every night and has some fantastic and simple games included. See the link below for some more information on the programme.
Active breaks
Every class incorporates short physical activity breaks into their daily routines. One of our favourite websites to use is GoNoodle. We've also made use of the Operation Transformation 10@10 exercises and other Wake Up Shake Up materials we have found online. It's a great way to get the children moving and helps with their concentration. Other Active Breaks included running outside.
For the months of November and December each class committed to having an Active Break Every Day. The classes displayed their record cards outside their classroom doors. The Active Flag Committee monitored which classes were the best at having an active break every day.

Halloween Circuits
The Active Flag Committee organised a number of games for our Halloween circuits. Each class got an opportunity to go outside and participate in the circuits which lasted for 8 minutes per stations. Check out the pictures to see how we got on.
Easter Egg Hunt
Each year the Parents Association organise an Easter Egg hunt for all the classes. Normally this event would be held outdoors. However when the weather is wet, they got very creative and created an amazing treasure hunt indoors for each class. The classes were timed to see which class could find the eggs the fastest. Great fun was had by all.
Take on the Teachers Challenge
As part of National Fitness Day 2019 we set up a Take on you Teachers Challenge in school. We had a penalty shoot out against your class teacher. Mr. Cousins proved impossible to beat!!
Active Flag Challenge
Each couple of months the Active Flag committee assign a new active challenge to the school. The challenge is tailored to suit each class. The classes get a number of weeks to practice the challenge before a class final is held. All the finalists then compete against each other in a whole school assemble. Have a look below at some of the challenges so far.
Rounders
Each year our 6th class participate in the Rounder League.
Rackard League
Children from Adamstown N.S., Raheen and Newbawn combine together to make a boys and girls Rackard League Team. Ms. Lyng and Ms. Walsh are currently in charge of the girls teams, with teachers from Newbawn coaching the boys teams. It's a great opportunity for the children to develop their football and hurling skills while have fun with their friends.
Active School Tours
Each class tries to incorporate some form of physical exercise into our annual school tours. In June 2019 3rd, 4th and 5th cycled part of the Greenway in Waterford. This was followed by some bowling and lazer tag in Activate Waterford. It was a great day out, even despite the rain.
