The Adamstown Green Flag Committee is usually made up of a boy and a girl from each class, from Second Class to Sixth. Over the years we have received a Green Flag for Litter & Waste, Energy & Water.
The Green Flag is run over a two-year cycle, the last two years, we worked on Global Citizenship-Marine Environment. We learned, and taught the rest of the school loads about the damage pollution, in particular micro-plastics, is doing to our oceans. We tried to reduce the amount of single use plastic used in our school and as a fundraiser, we sold re-useable travel mugs. The money we raised funded a trip to Seal Rescue Ireland in Courtown where we adopted our own school seal, we also had lots of money left over to donate to them. The next flag we are working on is Travel. We have already tried to make our school gate a 'Car Free Zone' and tried to encourage parents to 'Stop Idling' their cars in the carpark. We can't wait to learn more, and to teach the rest of the school all about the pollution caused by different ways of travel and the sustainable ways that we can travel to school! |
